The Blog of Cafe Dissensus Magazine – we DISSENT

Two poems

By Nishat Arif Hussaini

In Neo Mysore Cafe, Hyderabad

Upstairs in the Tiffin Room
We sit over chipped cups of coffee.
In the vacuum you speak,
Your eyes fixed on the wall above my head
And I look around for a suitable object to address.

The clatter of steel from the next table
Knifes through the speech between us
I nod in assent, while your lips
Move in syllables severed from sound.

Four cigarette butts accumulate
Till the bill arrives on a steel plate
Charging Rs. 1.60 on this date.
We walk down the wooden staircase
And merge into the bright noise of the street.

With You

Loving you
Has only lengthened the shadows
The specks of sunlight dappling the ground
have become fewer
as the leaves forget to nod in the breeze.
The books have become well worn
And the objects on the shelves
Now speak to me.
The blue glass is particularly
A good friend
Warmth in its indigo tint
That sometimes resembles
The colour of the sea.
