Since my childhood, I have been fascinated by travel. Being brought up in a rubber plantation, I was very close to nature, which taught me to appreciate everything around me and look for beauty in nature. (When I decided to make my first short film I wanted to shoot it in the place where I grew up and dedicate it to my family. The film “Save The Trees ~ They Provide Employment” was selected for India Is Global Video Challenge.) I took up photography to share the same beauty with other people. During my high school, my close friend, Nikhil’s dad happened to be an ace photographer. This made me understand the opportunities photography offered as a profession.
After finishing my school, I took a year off and assisted Mr. Anil Kumar. I learned photography from him more thoroughly and, also, understood the commercial world of photography. I was very lucky to be able to learn photography from such a great photographer. He introduced me to lighting. In addition, I learned fashion photography from him. This prompted me to make up my mind about taking up photography as a career.
After this, I joined the Symbiosis Institute of Design, where I obtained my undergraduate degree in communication design, specializing in film and video. It was around this time that Lunatic Clicks was born. I wanted to share my photography with others, which mainly focused on landscape and wildlife at that time. The best platform I could find to share my work was a Facebook page. The brand name, Lunatic Clicks, was born because I did not want to start it off as Vishal Thomas photography. This name stuck in my mind. I told this to my friend, Gagan Minhas. He was so taken in by this name that he sketched out a character for Lunatic Clicks the same night. The character was perfect and gave shape to my dream. And in a few days, the sketch was digitized. That is how Lunatic Clicks was born.
During my third year of college, I had an opportunity to assist another photographer, Jude D’silva, who was based in Goa. This expanded my horizon even wider. After this experience, I started freelancing under the name, Lunatic Clicks.
Now, finally, Lunatic Clicks has turned into a photography production house, led by me. In India, the experience of photography is beautiful. As a travel and wildlife photographer, I love it. India has so much to offer: from mountains to deserts to greenery to beaches to rivers to backwaters. For a photographer, it is one of the best travel locations in the world.
