What Exactly Happened at Kaliachak, Malda?

Different versions of the violent events at Kaliachak, Malda on 4 January, 2016, are doing the rounds in media and among general people. The incident is certainly condemnable because the target of the protesters, Kamlesh Tiwari, who made offensive comments against the Prophet Muhammad, is already serving jail-time. In a sense, the protest was unnecessary. Here we produce an account of the events collected from different sources. Read:
“As we already know, last Sunday at Kaliackak in the Malda district of West Bengal, a rally was taken out protesting against Kamlesh Tiwari’s offensive comments against the Prophet Muhammad…Few thousand people gathered for the protest. Whatever happened at the protest is condemnable and most people have expressed their sadness at the turn of events. Some excited and non-literate people smashed a B.S.F. vehicle and some of the vehicles at the Kaliachak Police Station. Later they set those vehicles on fire. Though I couldn’t go there, I found out from different sources the main reasons behind the violent incident.
First, everyone informed me about this turn of events, which was the source of the trouble. Because of a large crowd, NH 34 was either jammed or was deliberately obstructed. However, despite the obstruction, a B.S.F. vehicle had cleared the way and was making its way through the jam. At the main intersection, some people stopped the vehicle and asked the driver to take an alternative road, which passes through the police station. The alternative road meets the main road after about 1.5 kilometers. But one of the jawans didn’t agree to it and asked the driver to carry on by clearing the people at the rally. Consequently, some of the protesters didn’t agree to this and, it appears, one of the jawans pointed his rifle at the protesters to scare them and started abusing the protesters. What next?…The crowd became more excited and started fighting with the B.S.F. jawans, which ultimately led to the smashing of the vehicle. Immediately after this, the police from Kaliachak Police Station arrived at the scene and rescued the B.S.F. jawans…
Second, when the protesters were burning Kamlesh Tiwari’s effigy, one of the police officers drew his gun (because of the first incident with the B.S.F. and to control the incited crowd) and fired. Some of the hot-headed people in the crowd got further incensed and set the vehicles outside the police station on fire, which is utterly condemnable.
The loss/damage: As it appears, one B.S.F. jawan and one police officer were attacked in the incident. The glasses of the B.S.F. vehicle were broken. Inside the police station, one van, one jeep, 5-6 old impounded vehicles, along with one truck and 4-5 bikes were set on fire. However, the news channels are claiming this to be 50 vehicles. The shelter of the civic police was set on fire and the boundary wall of the police station was destroyed…Additionally, a tea-shop at the corner of the police station was destroyed during this fury.
This procession or protest was supposed to be against Kamlesh Tiwari and for demanding punishment against him. However, whatever followed must be condemned and the perpetrators punished. The Muslim groups and the RSS/BJP (especially Tapan Ghosh’s Hindu Sanhati) must be banned from holding any rally in the areas which are affected by the incidents. Moreover, the administration must keep a keen watch on political leaders making inciting speeches in those areas and on social media (and must refer to cyber crime cell, if need be). Along with eye-witness accounts, the B.S.F. jawans must be identified in order to find out what exactly had happened that day. It would be a good idea to form a peace committee with people from all religions in Kaliachak.”
In Bengali:
“আমরা জানি গত রবিবার মালদা জেলার কালিয়াচকে কমলেশ তিওয়ারীর (হজরত মুহাম্মদ সাঃ কে ব্যঙ্গ ও অশ্লীল ভাষা প্রয়োগ) এর বিরুদ্ধে বিক্ষোভ মিছিল বের হয়……কয়েক হাজার লোকের জনসমাবেশ হয়েছিলো এই বিক্ষোভে। কিন্তু মিছিলে ঘটে যায় এক নিন্দাজনিত ঘটনা যI অধিকাংশ লোকের মতেই খুব দুঃখ জনক ঘটনা। সেই মিছিলের কিছু মুর্খ, উত্তেজিত জনতা ১ টা BS.F গাড়ী এবং কালিয়াচক থানাতে কয়েকটা গাড়ী ভাংচুর করে এবং সেগুলোতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দেয়। যদিও আমি সেখানে যেতে পারিনি তবুও বিভিন্ন জনের কাছ থেকে এই ঝামেলার মুল কারনগুলি উদ্ধার করলাম।
- প্রথমত: এই কথাটা সবাই জানালো আর এই কান্ডটাই ঝামেলার সুত্রপাত- লোকের চাপে NH 34 জ্যাম হয়ে পড়ে বা পথ অবরোধ করা হয়। কিন্তু সেই অবরোধের পরেও ১ টা B.S.F জওয়ানদের গাড়ি সবাইকে সরিয়ে NH 34 রাস্তা দিয়েই পার হতে থাকে। মুল চৌরঙ্গীতে কিছু জনতা গাড়িটাকে আটক করে এবং ব্যাক রাস্তা যেটা থানার মধ্য দিয়ে গেছে সেটা দিয়ে নিয়ে যেতে বলে। এই রাস্তাটা আবার ১.৫ কিমি দুরেই মেইন রোডে মিলিত হয়েছে। কিন্তু জওয়ানদের মধ্যেই একজন নাকি সেটা মানতে রাজি হয়নি এবং সবাইকে সরিয়ে গাড়ি পার করতে বলে। অতপর বিক্ষোভ কারীদের মধ্যেই কয়েকজন এটাতে বাধা দেয় এবং একজন জওয়ান নাকি রাইফেল বের করে ভয় দেখাতে শুরু করে আর গালিগালাজ দিতে থাকে । তারপর আর কি???….জনতা আরও ক্ষেপে যায় এবং B.S.F. জওয়ানদের সাথে ধ্বস্তাধস্তি শুরু করলে সেটা গাড়ী ভাংচুর পর্যন্ত গড়ায়। পরক্ষনেই কালিয়াচক থানার পুলিশ সেখানে গিয়ে জওয়ানদের উদ্ধার করে।…
- দ্বিতীয়ত হলোঃ- কয়েকজনের মতে কালিয়াচক থানার সামনে যখন কমলেশ তিওয়ারীর কুশপুতুল দাহ করার সময় সেখানে থানার কোনো অফিসার অস্ত্র বের করে (প্রথম ঘটনার কারনে আর উত্তেজিত জনতাকে কন্ট্রোল করতে) ফায়ার করে যেটার বিরুদ্ধে কয়েকজন মাথামোটা লোক রে রে করে উঠে এবং থানার বাইরে দাড় করানো গাড়িতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দেয়। যেটা খুব নিন্দনীয় ঘটনা
ক্ষয়ক্ষতিঃ- শোনামতে ১ জন B.S.F জওয়ান এবং ১ জন পুলিশ অফিসার আক্রান্ত হন। B.S.F গাড়ীর কাঁচ ভাঙ্গা হয়। থানার ভিতরে ১ টা ভ্যান, ১ টা জিপ, আর কেস খাওয়া ভেঙ্গে পড়ে থাকা ৫-৬ টা পুরানো গাড়ি সহ ১ টা ট্রাক, 4-5 টা পড়ে থাকা বাইক সহ জ্বালানো হয়। যেটাকে নিউজ চ্যানেলে ৫০ টা গাড়ী পুড়োনোর কথা বলে প্রচার করছে। সিভিক পুলিশদের বসার ছাউনি পুড়েছে, এবং থানার বাউন্ডারী ওয়াল ভাঙ্গা হয়েছে…সাথে থানার কর্নারের ১ টা চায়ের দোকান এই রোষানলে ভেঙ্গে দেওয়া হয়।
এই মিছিল বা বিক্ষোভ ছিলো শুধুমাত্র কমলেশ তিওয়ারীর বিরুদ্ধে এবং তার শাস্তির দাবীতে মিছিল । কিন্তু যেটা ঘটেছে সেটা খুব নিন্দনীয় এবং শাস্তির যোগ্য। এই ঘটনার এলাকাগুলোয় আইন শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষার তাগিদে এই কদিন মুসলিমদের আর কোনও মিছিল নিষিদ্ধ করার পাশাপশি আরএসএস বিজেপি ( বিশেষ করে তপন ঘোষের হিন্দু সংহতি) -র নেতাদের এলাকা ও সোসাল মিডিয়াতে বয়ানবাজির উপর প্রশাসনের ( প্রয়োজনে সাইবার ক্রাইম সেল ) কড়া নজর রাখা উচিত । প্রয়োজনে প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীদের পাশাপশি সেই বিএসএফের জওয়ানদের চিহ্নিত করে তাঁদের কাছ থেকে সেদিন আসলে কী ঘটেছিল তা জানা । কালিয়াচকের সর্ব ধর্মের মান্যগন্য ব্যক্তিদের নিয়ে শান্তি কমিটি গঠন করলে ভাল হয় ।”
